《马赛曲》的作者是鲁日·德·李尔（1760—1836）。他当时是斯特拉斯堡驻军工兵上尉，业余音乐家。这首歌曲最初名叫《莱茵军战歌》。当时法国正同奥地利交战，《马赛曲》鼓舞了士兵。乐队指挥格雷特里对鲁日·德·李尔说：“你的《马赛曲》是具有大炮一样威力的音乐。”《马赛曲》原有6段歌词，第7段和最后一段（并非鲁日·德·李尔所作）是后来增加的。习惯上在公共场合使用的法国国歌仅用第1段和第6段。歌词对敌人毫不怜悯，而是号召人们，“让他们（敌人）浑浊的血液／灌溉我们的田野。”
这首歌曲很快流传开来。马赛的义勇军十分喜欢它，他们一开到首都就高唱这一歌曲。于是，巴黎人便称这首歌为《马赛赞歌》，后来又称之为《马赛曲》。当时法国已经有两首著名的革命歌曲，但《马赛曲》很快就得到了人们的承认并取代了那两首革命歌曲，成了战斗的共和国之歌和革命之歌。1795年7月14日，根据一项法律，《马赛曲》成了法国国歌。
《马赛曲》的作者也遭遇坎坷。1792年8月10日，同自由派军官关系密切的工兵上尉鲁日·德·李尔被停职。
鲁日·德·李尔只好离开军队。1793年9月，他以“嫌疑犯”的名义被捕。两年后，热月党人解放了他并恢复了他的军籍。但是，他不喜欢拿破仑。1804年，他直截了当地写信质问拿破仑说：“您把自由变成了什么？您把共和国变成了什么？”1817年，他在巴黎定居下来，但他的作品被禁止出现在巴黎的舞台上和国家图书馆里。他甚至在70岁时因为欠债被关进监狱，后来在朋友的担保下才被释放。光荣的三天（指1830年7月27日—29日，巴黎人民举行起义推翻查理十世的三天）使《马赛曲》复活了，人们在巴黎歌剧院演唱了这首歌曲。鲁日·德·李尔领到了抚恤金，并且得到了一件很讲究的大衣。但这件大衣没穿多久他就去世了。
