奥林匹克运动会当时指的就是夏季奥运会，其历史可以追溯至2000多年前的古希腊，因为各种原因的影响，古代奥运会在停办了1000多年后，为了沿袭古代奥运会的精神，直到1896年具有现代意义的夏季奥运会在雅典举办了第一届。冬季奥运会作为奥林匹克运动会的重要组成部分，则开始于1924年，其历史到现在还不到100年。

两个世界级奥运赛事虽然都同样在世界范围内举办，但是就参与运动员数量、赛事项目数量和影响力来看，夏季奥运会要远超过冬季奥运会，就拿产生的金牌量来看，夏季奥运会每届都会产生400枚的金牌数，而冬季奥运会仅有100枚左右，从这一点上就可以看出，夏季奥运会的规模的影响力巨大。此外，夏季奥运会项目多于冬季奥运会，并且几乎不受天气限制。而冬季奥运会受季节的影响，在选址等方面都会付出额外的心血和方案。

奥林匹克运动会（希腊语：Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες；法语：Jeux olympiques；英语：Olympic Games；中文简称“奥运会”），是国际奥林匹克委员会主办的世界规模最大的综合性运动会，每四年一届，会期不超过16日，是世界上影响力最大的体育盛会。

奥运会分为夏季奥运会、冬季奥运会。奥运会中，各个国家和地区用运动交流各国文化，以及切磋体育技能，其目的是鼓励人们不断进行体育运动。

二、冬奥会

冬季奥林匹克运动会（Olympic Winter Games）简称为冬季奥运会、冬奥会。主要由全世界地区举行，是世界规模最大的冬季综合性运动会，每四年举办一届，1994年起与夏季奥林匹克运动会相间举行

三、夏奥会

夏季奥林匹克运动会(Summer Olympic Games)简称夏季奥运会或夏奥会。主要由全世界地区举行，是世界规模最大的综合性运动会，由国际奥林匹克委员会的成员国轮流主办，每四年举办一届，与冬季奥林匹克运动会相间举行。

四、奥运会、夏奥会和冬奥会的区别

1、冬奥会只是奥运会的一部分，奥运会包含冬奥会和夏奥会；

2、夏奥会与冬奥会是独立概念，一般，奥运会特指夏奥会。

3、举办时间不一样，夏季奥运会自然是就是在夏季举办，大约在7-8月份；而冬奥会的举办的时间是大都在2月份左右。

4、项目的不同，冬奥会的项目主要是冰上项目和雪上项目：短道速滑、滑冰、冰球、冰壶、自由式滑雪、单板滑雪以及高山滑雪等，总计100个项目左右，而夏奥会的项目就很多了：田径、各种球类、击剑、举重等，总计400多个。

5、历史渊源不同，夏季奥运会起源于2000年前，中间停办后，从1986年恢复，后演变成每四年举办一次；而冬奥会开始于1924年，连100年的历史都没有，影响力不及夏奥会。

     根据《奥林匹克宪章》（Olympic Charter ）第六条（6 Olympic Games*）规定：“The Olympic Games are competitions between athletes in individual or team events and not between countries. They bring together the athletes selected by their respective NOCs, whose entries have been accepted by the IOC. They compete under the technical direction of the IFs concerned.“
